Dried Flowers and Cottagecore, a marriage made on Instagram.

Dried Flowers and Cottagecore are two of the most trending design elements on social media. In this post, we explore how they go together and how you can make them work for your social media account.

What is cottagecore?

Cottagecore is one of the biggest stylistic movements of this decade so far.

It is so prevalent that the New York Times devoted a whole article to it and called it a ‘budding aesthetic movement’.

At its most basic it is a style that harkens back to the idyll of English rural life pre-Industrial Revolution.

Although members of the cottagecore community will tell you that it is more than just an aesthetic or fashion trend.

They believe the whole idea of cottagecore embraces a complete way of living.

It is a lifestyle that offers an escape from the trappings of the modern world which has caused so much destruction to the environment.

Not only does it follow the traditional English countryside style but also ethos of self-sufficiency.

Origins of cottagecore

You could be forgiven for thinking cottagecore only exists on Instagram and other social media platforms.

After all, if you have spent any time on social media recently you are bound to have seen images that reflect the cottagecore lifestyle.

Think pictures of women in long billowy dresses and hats taken in open countryside, and slow motion videos of coffee and books.

The origins of cottagecore are as far ranging as the people who have succumb to its charm.

Some say it has been bubbling, like a pan of homemade jam, since 2017.

Yet more say the start began as recently 2019.

What we can say, without a doubt, is that during 2020, cottagecore style became one of the major aesthetic trends.

Cottagecore and the Pandemic

The cottagecore movement gained worldwide converts when the Covid pandemic hit.

With enforced lockdowns throughout the world people began to look for more ways to fill their time whilst at home.

We all found that we now had more time to try our hands at home baking. Just how many banana bread disasters did you have?

While searching for things to do at home more people discovered cottagecore.

Is cottagecore just an aesthetic?

There is no doubt that using the cottagecore hashtag will bring some beautiful pictures into your own Instagram account.

But there is more to it than pretty images and imaginings of a rural life.

True cottagecore proponents are centred around a more mindful and thoughtful life. Caring for the environment as well as their own surroundings.

It should come as no surprise that dried flowers and cottagecore have become perfect companions.

The muted tones of a dried flower bouquet in a provincial vase provide the perfect pastoral backdrop for a social media photoshoot.

But dried flowers give more to the cottagecore idyll than merely scenery for a picture.

At the heart of this aesthetic is the desire for a simplistic, unfussy but ultimately sustainable way of living.

As dried flowers do not require the constant attention that some cut flowers and potted plants do, they allow cottagecore followers to partake in other activities such as making freshly baked bread.

Dried Flowers are long-lasting too, many years in fact, when treated with proper care and attention. This is at the heart of the cottagecore ethos of caring for nature and the environment.

Dried Flowers and Crafting

Cottagecore’s understanding of traditional skills bears a great resemblance to that of the burgeoning band allotmenteers’. Another trend which has increased over the last two years.

Both share the ethos that the making of something is the main reason and making something totally correct, is secondary.

Although dried flowers are still delicate, they can withstand a certain amount of movement. This allows for owners of dried flowers to play with their natural color palette until it matches their home decor.

All dried flowers can be used to create the perfect cottagecore aesthetic but these are the ones that we think work best.

Winged Everlasting (Ammobium Alatum). This charming flower from the daisy family provides a meadow look. This is why we use it in our meadow half moon wreath.

Hang this wreath on a wall as a backdrop for a portrait of yourself or a product.

Alternatively, place in the middle of a table for a picnic setting.
